Leaders influence change by encouraging those around them to work towards a common goal. A leader’s most potent tool to influence people is communication. 


Effective communication and influential leadership are intertwined. Effective communication plays a pivotal role in aligning efforts to pursue goals, gain trust, cultivate team spirit, and inspire positive change. 

When there is ambiguous communication, essential information can be misinterpreted, causing conflicts that hinder progress. Leaders should consider these skills to improve their communication.

Active Listening

When leaders listen to their team, they get an in-depth understanding of their perspective and knowledge. When employees share their grievances and opinions, leaders should ask questions, request them to elaborate, and take notes.

It is essential for leaders not to interrupt when employees are sharing their opinions. Instead, they should maintain focus by eliminating distractions such as answering calls or checking emails. 

Communicate Clearly

Leaders should communicate in a clear and precise way. They should define company goals and the effort every employee should put into achieving those goals. When goals are not met, they should simplify their message or ask how they can better clarify. The more precise leaders are, the more minor misinterpretations and confusion there are in the workplace. 


Empathy is among the top leadership skills needed for success. Employees feel valued when leaders take the time to understand and acknowledge their feelings. Therefore, leaders need to demonstrate empathy to build a more robust and productive culture.


According to a recent survey, a significant number of managers and employees reported that they hardly know what’s happening in their company. Lack of transparency creates communication barriers and mistrust. 

By being open when speaking about the company’s opportunities, goals, and challenges, leaders can foster an environment where employees feel valued and empowered to share their ideas. Leaders should also acknowledge mistakes to create an enabling environment for problem-solving. In addition, every employee should know their role in helping achieve company objectives. 

Receive and Execute Feedback

Leaders should normalize asking for feedback from their team. After getting feedback, they should go on and implement it. When leaders constantly receive input but don’t act on it, employees lose faith in their ability to lead. On the contrary, when leaders work on feedback, employees feel their perspective is valued.
